DNC Part 1 -- the Bumper Sticker, the Amateur & Biased Polling

Image
The DNC was rich with material – not substance, but blog material.  I watched as much as I could stomach and then some, but not all.  One pundit called it soaring in rhetoric, but the rubber doesn’t hit the road.  And as Romney said, their party's over & they awake w. a hangover -- the jobs report. One place to start would be the bumper sticker Biden so proudly trotted out:  “Osama bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is alive!”  Great for people w. sound bite intellectual capacity.  For others, here are some facts. Bin Laden Dead Regarding OBL, which they continue to tout because they have hardly anything else to tout, here’s something I don’t think I’ve heard elsewhere.  If you recall, when Kalid Sheikh Mohamed was taken alive, the Pakistanis played a key part in that – a cooperative effort.  We had good relations with them under Bush.  And of course the waterboarding followed, which gave the information that saved many other lives, and led ultimately t

Thurs. Aug. 30 The convention floor (& elevated seats) were absolutely packed – every seat & the aisles were full.  We were warned not to step out before 7:30 as the fire marshall wouldn’t be letting anyone more in due to floor capacity rules.  The invocation was given obviously by an LDS man – no title.  Connie Mack spoke of the achievements of a great society – Olympics, Mars landing.  MR will restore the American dream.  It’s morning once again.  A great Reagan video.  The Gingriches spoke – good to see so many friends, to renew the American spirit w. real leadership.  Pres. Obama gutted Reagan’s welfare reform.  There’s no substitute for victory – each of us must do our part now.  A video w. Latino entrepreneurs.  Craig Romney spoke fluent Spanish for a bit & the Latinos cheered.  We need Hispanic immigrants.  His grandparents came to this country from Mexico with nothing.  Jeb Bush spoke of his pride for his brother, who in incredibly dangerous

Tues. Aug. 28 (Continued) There’ve been 2 evening sessions (Tues, Wed) since my last message, hopefully with good TV coverage, so some of that I may go light on. After the Tuesday afternoon business session with roll call of states, etc., we had about 25 minutes before the evening session to grab a bite – the concession stands were swamped, but I gulped down a salad.  Boehner said Obama’s record is a shadow of his rhetoric – throw him out!  And spoke [ of George Romney saying just when you think it’s bad, the tide turns [I think we’re seeing it].  Priebus cited Mitt’s accomplishments, said time to elect MR to begin the great American comeback...stand with us.  Great video & speech by Mia Love (Black mayor of Sarasota Springs, Utah) – “we’re not buying what you’re selling in 2012, Mr. Obama!”   Oak Ridge Boys’ rendition of Amazing Grace – delegates sang along.  Jack Gilchrist – as Lee Iococa said, “Lead, follow or get out of the way.”   John Kasich on his turnaroun

This will be quick – have to be on a bus shortly for the convention – I got to bed VERY late (explained below) & slept in, then worked out. Tuesday morning at 10 we had a delegation brunch in a huge tent-like structure, w. lots of press.  Hewitt again MC’d, but Dennis Prager (whom I’d listed as a favorite on a questionnaire) gave one of the main talks, speaking of Adam Corolea (sp?) who became conservative after listening to him – when they hear us, they’ll come over, if we nicely, humorously, vigorously make the case for conservative values.  Also his usual themes of the American trinity on the coins, entitlements create unhappy people, etc.  Hohn Boehner then spoke of the 12 contested seats in CA, and “the only way Nancy Pelosi will get the gavel back is by prying it from my cold, dead hands.”  His political career began as pres. of his homeowners assn. Mitt’s VP choice says more about Mitt than Ryan.  Our job is to give the same opportunities to ouir kids, etc.  Darrel I

Up before 7:00am (4:00 LA time) and down to the lobby by 7:15 for a good spot to hear Chris Christie supposedly at 7:30.  Several deep ahead of me.  Then heard 8:00 was the time, then 8:30 passed, with a few false alarms  of Springsteen hits (a Jersey boy, associated w. gov. Christie).   My back was complaining of standing, but the energy level in the room didn’t diminish.  Finally after 8:45 Hugh Hewitt acted as MC, introduced Meg Whitman, saying maybe things will have to get worse in CA before it wakes up & her time has come.  She told of an incident speaking a week or 2 before the election in CA when candidates traditionally take no questions, and a loud heckler got nasty about her not taking questions, and gov. Christie got in the guy’s face & said something like “you shut up and let her talk – she’s working hard to make CA better.”  Christie was received w. loud applause & Romney/Ryan posters waving (handed out beforehand).  He also told a story – of an Oba
