Obama the Car Czar (& Insurance & Bank & ...)

Lesson #2 in Obamaspeak, or for those familiar with the novel 1984, “New speak.” “The U.S. government has no interest in running GM.”

What this really means is, that after the government bails GM out and takes a controlling interest, it is vitally interested in who runs the company – to the point of ousting the CEO; and regulating their executives’ pay, the trips they can take, and modes of transportation on trips; and mandating the kinds of cars they can make, and where, and approving/disapproving restructuring plans; and taking over their warranties.

Let this be a lesson to anyone considering taking money from the government. There is life after bankruptcy, and things worse than “death” – but those of little faith are willing rather to “live” in slavery. And so Patrick Henry’s idealism (“Give me liberty or give me death!”) falls by the wayside. This is the “change” we were promised.

Obama is maintaining overgenerous union contracts intact, at the expense of the company, jobs and country. And they are changing the rules for union votes to take away the secret ballot, enabling strong-arm enforcement. Obama’s deference to unions has now also begun to unravel NAFTA (teamsters didn’t like Mexican long-haul vehicles), with potentially serious trade war repercussions. But oh, no, there’s no deference to special interests in this administration.

And so we’ve lived to see the day that the government has taken over much of the auto, insurance & banking & mortgage industries, as well as bankruptcy courts. They’re being run by hack academics and politicians who can’t even do their own taxes right, let alone run a company, an industry or the biggest economy in the world. And now comrade Obama goes to the G20 to instruct other countries on how to run their economies. Fortunately, at least for them, at least some know better, and several (Russia, EU president, France, China) have been telling us so – to no avail. And the administration is seriously considering going to a global currency.

Through the campaign, and all of this, Mr. Obama has never outright denied being socialist – he artfully laughs it off as if it were ridiculous, hangs up on the NY Times reporter asking him, or changes the subject. Well, actions speak louder than words – even flowery ones, and we’ve seen enough now to know the answer – at least for anyone not still enraptured in Obamaphoria.

Oh, but the world was sure to love us more with Obama at the helm. N. Korea launches its Taepodong-2 missile (possibly capable of delivering one of its nuclear weapons to the US) this week, despite all of Obama’s marvelous influence, Iran just keeps marching along on the road to nuclear weaponry, and the Taliban continues to expand its efforts in Afghanistan. And now indications that Hezbollah is infiltrating across our border with Mexico, amidst the chaotic drug wars. Perhaps indeed it is better to be respected than loved.
