Climate Gate, an Uncertain Trumpet & Corn-Husker Kickbacks
Climate Gate
Occasionally Jon Stewart throws conservatives a bone: “Poor old Al Gore... global warming was just debunked by the same internet he invented.” Sounds like my family’s East Anglian emigrants left behind some real rif-raf who conjured up “Climate Gate.”
On the same subject, I understand Copenhagen was providently hit by a serious snowstorm & cold in the midst of the global warming (or “climate change”) conference. And Pres. Obama just can’t get enough “No’s” there, can he (after the Olympics pitch)? Can’t be one of his favorite places – he always comes away empty-handed.
Echos of Bush
However, maybe there’s a glimmer of hope for his teachability. At the Nobel ceremony, he apparently got true religion – there really IS evil in the world, and some you CAN’T negotiate with but must confront to have peace. Amazing when reality and responsibility finally hit you! He almost sounded like Bush, and it was funny to see the dumbfounded looks on the faces of Europeans there no doubt expecting something very different after having given him the peace prize. Oh, no! Maybe he’s “going rogue” (a tip of the hat to Sarah Palin’s excellent new book).
At West Point he announced his Afghanistan decision to some sleepy cadets (his speeches seem to put a lot of people to sleep). The trumpet seemed to sound a somewhat uncertain tone, both announcing a bit of a surge (but only ¾ of what his general said he needed), as well as a withdrawal date. After concerns over the messages to enemies & allies, his people qualified the withdrawal date as just a beginning, with the rate dependant on conditions. But he has in his first year tripled the number of troops in Afghanistan. Boy, he’s shown he can far outspend Bush, and send far more troops! But he’ll continue to bash Bush & his “torture” & Guantanamo.

I loved Harry Reed’s comment to reporters recently, basically that “The bill has a lot of good stuff in it – I can’t tell you, but believe me.” And with a face like that, how could we not? Apparently he can’t even tell the 2nd ranking Democrat, who when asked to comment on some detail, said he didn’t know – apparently only the back-room staff/drafters know, and suddenly now they can keep a secret after years of national security leaks. Just more of Obama’s promised transparency & bipartisanship.
Apparently the page count & price just keep going up as they secure the final several votes to reach 60 (totally partisan) – e.g., the “corn husker kickback” (to Ben Nelson & his constituents – Nebraska will be the new Florida retirement center), the “Louisiana Purchase,” and “Florida Flim-Flam.” So much for Obama’s “no more earmarks.” And just as providently as in Copenhagen, Washington D.C. also got dumped on with record snow as the final vote neared. At least they heard us on the public option.
