“Divert, Distract & Distort” & the Real Romney

Primary Update

With Santorum out, and Newt & Ron Paul picking up scraps, Romney cleaned up in the 5 primaries this week:  Pennsylvania, NY, Connecticut, Delaware & Rhode Island.  With 66% of the delegates decided in 43 primaries, this puts Mitt at 847 delegates, needing 300 more (of the remaining 770) to formally secure the nomination.  He should reach that, at his current rate, by May 29 (Texas), or certainly by June 5 (California, etc.).  The National Republican Party organization is already formally merging w. the Romney organization to pool resources for the general election campaign, which has for all intents and purposes already begun.

Some hilights of his victory speech (apologies for my note-taking – the whole speech can be heard at www.MittRomney.com).  “After Obama’s great Greek-column extravaganza 4 years ago, what do we have to show?  ... He can’t run on his record – he will divert, distract & distort – that kind of campaign may have worked at another time & place, but it’s still about the economy, and we’re not stupid! ... This president is putting us on a path where government controls most of the economy, and ruled by bureaucrats. ... Those who promise to spread wealth around only succeed in spreading poverty around.  He spoke of Obama’s false promises and weak leadership.

“Everywhere I go, Americans are tired of being tired, and many of those who are fortunate enough to have a job are working harder for less.  As I look around at the millions of Americans without work, the graduates who can’t get a job, the soldiers who return home to an unemployment line, it breaks my heart.  This does not have to be.  It is the result of failed leadership and of a faulty vision.  Government is at the center of his vision.  It dispenses the benefits, borrows what it cannot take and consumes a greater and greater share of the economy.  If the president’s health care law is fully implemented, government will continue to control half the economy, and we will have effectively ceased to be a free enterprise society.

“I see an America with a growing middle class, with rising standards of living.  I see children even more successful than their parents. [countering the Dems’ constant drumbeat of “fairness”] We’ll stop the unfairness of no school choice, of unions contributing to candidates not of members’ choosing, and one generation passing larger debts on to the next.  Is it fair for taxpayers to pay for....?

“I know how to lead us out of Obama’s job-stagnant economy.  I see a future where others congratulate us for success, not attack us.  In America I see character, choices, hard work matters & is rewarded.  We’ll restore the promise of America only if we restore the principles that made it the greatest on earth.  Join me Nov. 6 – this time we’ll get it right.  We’ll stop the days of apologizing for America and never again apologize for America abroad.  We believe in ourselves and America.  For those who are struggling, hold on a little longer, a better America begins tonight.

“After 43 primaries and caucuses, many long days and not a few long nights, I can say with confidence and gratitude – that you have given me a great honor and solemn responsibility.”

Stewart Varney called it a well-delivered speech, and even Mark Levin said it was “very good, but not Reaganesque or Churchillian.”  Anyone (even Santorum?) will always fall short of his standards.  Others noted he’s clearly gotten better over time.

State of the General Election Race

Dick Morris points out that the gender gap is smaller now than at any time since 1996.  Also, 7 of 8 last elections, the incumbents lost all of the undecideds in the polling (and then some).  So when Mitt polls statistically even/tied w. Obama as he is now, and Obama’s at 44%, that means Mitt should expect some 56% in the election.  The only question remaining, however, is whether that corresponds with a win in the electoral college, and I heard an analysis today that puts that race much closer, with 2 or 3 critical swing states.

But the Congressional races are looking favorable to the GOP, helped somewhat by the 2010 census shift in districting, w. blue states losing representatives to red states.  But 40 GOP House seats are up for grabs, so no time for complacency.  There’s even hope for getting a majority in the Senate.  All of that will be needed, in addition to the presidency, to make sure there’s the ability to undo all the damage of the Obama administration & Democrat Senate (& the recent Pelosi House).  Time to make donations to the contested races – Hugh Hewitt’s web site lists those he’s identified as most key & worthy of donations.

“Dog Wars”  In retaliation for the Democrat hubbub about the Romney family dog, Seamus, riding on a roof carrier, a Romney advisor tweeted about Obama’s admission in his biography of having eaten dog while growing up in Indonesia.  No question as to which is “top dog” there.

Now that Newt has also officially “suspended” his campaign, he’s now saying he wants to be a unifier & helpful – that’s new, and more promising than Santorum at this point.  But not really any more Romney-friendly than to say he’s a lot better than Obama.  He did say that the difference between Obama & Mitt is even bigger than between Reagan & Carter.  I’d love to be a fly on the wall at the meeting between Mitt & Rick today.  Bachman endorsed Mitt this week.  The Tea Party ducks are lining up.  Better late than never.

Mitt’s been off stumping with some of the dozen potential VP picks, checking them out.

Obama Strikes Back

Just as Romney predicted, the distractions from the weighty issues like the economy & debt have begun already.  Using distorted quotes, Obama says Mitt wouldn’t have made the decision he did to get bin Laden.  Mitt countered that even Jimmy Carter would have made that easy decision.  Rumsfeld says it wasn’t a tough decision at all, given all the intel and assets already in place (& facilitated by the enhanced interrogation & preparations under Bush).  So Obama’s touting his only notable success – foreign or domestic.  As they say, even a broken clock is right once a day.  And it sure sounds like a “mission accomplished” victory lap/ football-spiking to me, including his bin Laden 1-year anniversary trip to Afghanistan.  Similar to his ground zero appearance last 9/11.  And of course he’s conveniently declaring the war on terror basically won – just in time for some much-needed political capital.  Just as they’re touting miniscule movements in the economy which is struggling to recover, despite Obama – not thanks to him. Unemployment dropped to 8.1% -- due to huge dropouts from the work force that aren’t counted, and skew the statistic.

Obama is off on the campaign trail at taxpayer expense, preaching to the choir by promoting student financial aid, etc. in an effort to hold one of his key (& most naïve) constituencies.  But polls show them waking up and growing increasingly disenchanted with him.  At the same time, their unemployment statistics are abysmal, so they’re out protesting for free aid.  But of course when they graduate, their prospects in this economy will be abysmal, not to mention the mountain of national debt they’ll face, regardless of personal college debt.

Obama attacked the Romney/Ryan budget as being cruel to the poor & helpless, and deferential to the rich – more of the same class warfare.  Ignoring what objective analyses show as unsustainable deficits, unfunded liabilities and debt.  The Dems have no answers to that, and the Democrat Senate hasn’t passed a budget for nearly 3 years – continuing to bury their heads in the sand and kick the can down the road – presumably to after the election.  Just as Obama is doing w. sensitive foreign issues as he stated to Medvedev.

Biden today chimed in, saying Romney would take us back to the Cold War (as if the Russians & Chinese weren’t already).  Well, Reagan won that one with “Peace through strength” – basically Romney’s philosophy.  The Democrats seem all too eager to declare the war on terror over – with one administrative official saying exactly that.  Once again naïve liberal wishful thinking that can only invite complacency and aggression by the terrorists & terrorist states.  Speaking of which, there’s actually something I agree with bin Laden on – his opinion of Biden as found in the captured documents.

After the Dems promises to “drain the swamp” of all the fraud and corruption, now we seem to be more swamped than ever – they seem to be filling it, instead.  ACORN, Fast & Furious, Blogoyovich, GSA extravagant parties, the Secret Service in Colombia scandal, the chief of ICE & his subordinates’ embezzlements, John Edwards in court over the million dollars of campaign donations used to hush his mistress, etc.  It’s the gift that keeps on giving.  They seem drunk with power & growing their government fiefdoms and power of the purse to fill their coffers and buy constituencies.  And power and money corrupt.

Once again, the “great legal minds” of the Obama administration are called on the carpet at the Supreme Court – this time over the Arizona lawsuit regarding immigration enforcement.  And they fared poorly, even by the admission of new liberal justice Kagan.

Prager spoke of Obama’s speech at the Holocaust museum where he attacked big business.  Prager noted that big business didn’t kill 6 million Jews, 75 million Chinese 8 million Ukrainians, etc. – big government did.  I’d note that big business got big because of success & doing things right – Obama is again attacking success, like Romney’s.

George Clooney is throwing a Hollywood $12 million Obama fundraiser.  Time for us to start making some small donation sacrifices, so that we and the nation don’t suffer irreparable damage from another 4-year Obama term.  Go to the Romney campaign link on this page.  And/or to Hugh Hewitt’s page where he identifies the most needy Congressional Republicans running this year, to give Mitt the Congressional support he’d need to get things done.

What to Expect

Prager also cited a NYT column (April 24, 2012, 11:58 pm “Playing the Mormon Card” By ROSS DOUTHAT,
http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/24/playing-the-mormon-card/) describing how the media will be doing Obama’s dirty work of dragging Mitt’s faith thru the mud.  They’ll delve at great depth into peculiarities of Mormon theology, with the excuse of informing curiosity & votes in an election year.  People need to realize that the same could be done to any religion to make any of them look odd.

Along those lines, the May 2012 Smithsonian just ran an article on Mitt’s Mormon ancestral roots in Colonia Juarez, Mexico (along with a companion article on Obama’s in Kenya).  “Lands of their Fathers:  Mexican Mission”  More a travelogue about present-day dual citizens, FHE, rural life, etc. than anything theological.  Only a snippet of the pioneer history & Mexican revolution.  My mother likes to say that if anyone raises the Romney polygamy history, we just counter with the polygamy practiced in Kenya.

The Democratic Party has produced a
television ad purporting to show Rep Paul Ryan throwing grandma off the cliff, by opposing ObamaCare.  A couple of San Antonio doctors have responded with an effective ad to counter this injustice. See the ad produced by Drs Jane Hughes and Kris Held

Al Gore is now calling for an “American Spring,” leveraging off the Occupy movement and May Day protests.  Maybe he’s right -- we do need to throw off our current oppressive, tyrannical dictator.

The Measure of a Man

2 stories about Mitt’s character by Bain CEO/founder, and a partner at Bain.

(From Time Magaizine’s April 30, 2012 issue, “The 100 Most Influential People in the World.” “Mitt Romney, The Success Story” by Bill Bain)

“When I asked Mitt Romney to join Bain & Co. in 1977, I knew he was brilliant, but there was much I didn’t know.  As founder and CEO, I liked being first in the office when that was practical.  On Mitt’s first day, he arrived first.  I came in earlier the next day, and there he was again.  I decided to shake Mitt up a little and have some fun.  I walked out of my office, stood in front of his desk and said, ‘Mitt, you are beginning to piss me off.’  He said, ‘What? What?’  I asked him, ‘Why so early?’  He said that after helping Ann with the children, he would visit the sick from his church and then come to work.  We all looked at one another and applauded him.”

“Mitts work ethic, analytical mind and devotion to family and country are a cocktail for success.  When I picked him to become the first managing partner of Bain Capital, I knew he would help us create a successful business.  When he retired from Bain Capital in 1999 to take over as CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, I knew he would make them memorable.  When Mitt was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2003, I knew he would get rid of the waste that had plagued our state.  Now as I watch the current presidential race, I know this country will be blessed if Mitt’s next job is President of the United States.”

(This one received by email, but checked out on “Romney Search,” “TruthorFiction” and “Snopes”)

“Regardless of who your current favorite candidate is, this is interesting.  Sometimes, this facet of Romney’s personality isn’t so subtle. In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, had disappeared. She had attended a rave party in New York City and gotten high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was. Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to help find Gay’s daughter Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and  called everyone Bain did business with in New York, and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter. Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could – prostitutes, drug addicts – anyone.

“That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her. As a result, a teenage boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly. The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey, where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal  symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day. Romney’s former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter’s life, saying, “It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to
the day I die.”

“So, here’s my epiphany: Mitt Romney simply can’t help himself. He sees a problem, and his mind immediately sets to work solving it, sometimes consciously, and sometimes not-so-consciously. He doesn’t do it for self-aggrandizement, or for personal gain. He does it because that’s just how he’s wired.

“Many people are unaware of the fact that when Romney was asked by his old employer, Bill Bain, to come back to Bain & Company as CEO to rescue the firm from bankruptcy, Romney left Bain Capital to work at Bain & Company for an annual salary of one dollar.  When Romney went to  the rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he accepted no salary for three years, and wouldn’t use an expense account. He also accepted no  salary as Governor of Massachusetts.

Character counts!! (and yes...that's worth reading again!)

Now think about Obama’s earlier years in contrast, affiliating w. radicals, terrorists, doing drugs, etc.
