Letter to the Editor -- a Tale of 2 Economies


Here is my letter as submitted today to the editors of the Daily Breeze (South Bay), Los Angeles Times & Orange County Register.  150 word limit.  The Breeze called today and said it may be published sometime in the coming week.  We'll see about the others.  I'm still catching up on a post about the 3rd debate & recent events -- the polls continue to improve for Romney, and Benghazi-gate details coming out are making the administration look worse and worse.

A Tale of Two Economies

Consider the candidates’ past economic performances as indicators of what to expect in the next 4 years. 

Obama.  There were lofty promises, but with no real recovery to show for it he doubled the deficits, increasing the national debt 50% (by $5 trillion) in 4 years.  This has been called “fiscal child abuse” and “the biggest threat to our national security.”  Add to this no budget in 4 years, a first time lowering of the US credit rating, and chronic unemployment.  Instead of hope, we face a fiscal cliff; yet he urges us “forward” like lemmings following Greece.    

Romney.  As Massachusetts governor with an 87% Democrat legislature, and as successful leader in business, church, and the Olympics, he balanced budgets consistently, created surpluses, created and saved many jobs and enterprises, and kept his many promises. 

Wake up, America!  Historically, 2nd terms are worse. “Fool us twice, blame on us.”  


The next ambassador to Switzerland?

Political Apathy & Antipathy and the Role of Politics

“A pox on both their houses” – Perfection as a Standard for Political Action We have come through another contentious election.  But I think I have heard “A pox on both their houses” (speaking of partisan politics) one time too many to not respond.  People who find the rhetoric/methods/contention of politics distasteful disengage, justifying it by claiming to take the higher moral ground.  What does that solve?  Does that address the important issues, or leave it to the loud and distasteful, or those lacking in judgment or information?  Of course we can and should raise the quality of our political discourse – focusing more on issues than personal attacks -- which is difficult for the party whose character is incessantly maligned for political gain.  But when entire parties and positions are dismissed out of hand, or the entire political process, because of the words or actions of some who claim to represent various parties, or because contention is viewed as unworthy, a dis

Epiphanies, Socialists in Democrats' Clothing & the Welfare State

Another Epiphany! Giving credit where credit is due, apparently Pres. Obama has had yet another epiphany similar to those in his (ig)Nobel prize speech (that there IS evil in the world that can NOT be negotiated with but must be fought). The other day he actually used the words “war on terror” for the first time, instead of “overseas contingency operations,” or “man-caused disasters.” The Left must be fuming. It is not yet clear whether this is a real conversion from the liberal-left virtual world to reality, or just Augustinian political expediency. If the latter, our outcries may be getting through – liberals just have to feel loved, and apparently he wasn’t feeling the love being returned from the rest of the world (his "foreign affairs") after his apology tours, so he’s starting to make another try at patching things up back home.
