2017 April to May Miscellaneous

Again, I  am catching up after a few months of blog inactivity.  Following is a chronological collection of notes and Facebook posts.  They include:

Successful US ICBM interceptor test to counter N. Korean threats, Trump's trip to Saudi Arabia, Israel & Europe, a few posts regarding the Left's attempts to silence conservative speech in America, confirmation of media bias against Trump & the GOP, Poland's prime minister berating Europe for being soft on terrorism & immigration, CNN not innocent of its own harassment, Trump innocent of leaking intel sources, division in America, more revealed on the terrible Iran deal, climate change science vs policy, North Korea's belligerent missile tests & the different China & Russia responses, the MOAB bomb in Afghanistan, Democrats and the Nazi & fascist cards, Gorsuch's Supreme Court confirmation and my Facebook interchange with a Trump detractor, the US missile strike against the Syrian air base that launched the chemical weapon attack (a new sheriff in town), Russian hacking in the election and Trump-Russia conspiracy theories, Trump's immigration ban is constitutional, and restitution to victimized minorities.

Put this in your pipe, and smoke it, North Korea & Iran! I'm feeling less vulnerable in L.A. And the country as a whole should feel relief from possible EMP blackouts.

This Memorial Day, God bless the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and who continue to make other sacrifices for our freedoms. I was moved by the stories of surviving friends and families this morning on the Dennis Prager show.

I also found inspiring the words of President Trump in Saudi Arabia, and the imagery of military solidarity symbolized in his participation in the sword dance, and in Israel:
"It is a choice between two futures—and it is a choice America CANNOT make for you.
"A better future is only possible if your nations drive out the terrorists and extremists. Drive. Them. Out.
"DRIVE THEM OUT of your places of worship.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your communities.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your holy land, and
DRIVE THEM OUT OF THIS EARTH."
It reminds me of those in the Book of Mormon who would not tolerate the Gadianton Robbers, but drove them out from their midst. Otherwise, they will continue to plague us and others.
And he also clearly called out Iran as a key part of the problem:
"Starving terrorists of their territory, their funding, and the false allure of their craven ideology, will be the basis for defeating them.
"But no discussion of stamping out this threat would be complete without mentioning the government that gives terrorists all three—safe harbor, financial backing, and the social standing needed for recruitment. It is a regime that is responsible for so much instability in the region. I am speaking of course of Iran.
"From Lebanon to Iraq to Yemen, Iran funds, arms, and trains terrorists, militias, and other extremist groups that spread destruction and chaos across the region. For decades, Iran has fueled the fires of sectarian conflict and terror.
"It is a government that speaks openly of mass murder, vowing the destruction of Israel, death to America, and ruin for many leaders and nations in this room.
"Among Iran’s most tragic and destabilizing interventions have been in Syria. Bolstered by Iran, Assad has committed unspeakable crimes, and the United States has taken firm action in response to the use of banned chemical weapons by the Assad Regime – launching 59 tomahawk missiles at the Syrian air base from where that murderous attack originated.
"Responsible nations must work together to end the humanitarian crisis in Syria, eradicate ISIS, and restore stability to the region. The Iranian regime’s longest-suffering victims are its own people. Iran has a rich history and culture, but the people of Iran have endured hardship and despair under their leaders’ reckless pursuit of conflict and terror.

"Until the Iranian regime is willing to be a partner for peace, all nations of conscience must work together to isolate Iran, deny it funding for terrorism, and pray for the day when the Iranian people have the just and righteous government they deserve.
The decisions we make will affect countless lives."

A Syrian crematorium has now been identified adjacent to a prison, where some 50 bodies have been burned per day to cover up mass murders.  Assad has got to go.

RIP free speech in America, Part III. Here's yet another instance demonstrating the third tactic to silence conservative speech, as mentioned in my May 13 post. Again, as with O'Reilly, Media Matters apparently orchestrated a campaign against advertisers. Like sharks, they smelled blood in the water from O'Reilly, which whipped them into a frenzy and encouraged them. Again, they can't win the war of ideas, so they fight dirty. The advertisers need to wise up -- those calling them are not typically Fox News audience, and so the advertising base won't be significantly impacted. And while typically one complaint represents 1,000 who feel similarly but don't complain, that's completely untrue for such a politically orchestrated campaign. Maybe if more of the real viewing audience began calling the same advertisers and threatening to boycott them if they do pull funding, things will change. Or fighting fire with fire, by calling MSNBC's or CNN's advertisers to complain (legitimately) about their fake news, character assassinations and bias....

The media bias has been glaringly obvious to me, and now quantitatively confirmed by this Harvard study. Over 90% against Trump -- and viciously. For our liberal mainstream media, Obama could do no wrong, and Trump no right. Trump has made numerous excellent appointments, delivered on campaign promises to those who elected him, made some excellent speeches, including on his recent trip to Saudi Arabia, Israel & Europe, and shown real leadership and strength much needed in this dangerous world. But the media is obsessed with Russian conspiracy theories and verbal faux pas. I care much more about results for America & its allies, but the media & Dems are more focused on inarticulateness and political interests, still smarting from the election. Which brings to mind the scripture: "That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought." Isaiah 29:21

The Polish prime minister is another rare, brave, politically incorrect leader who sees and speaks clearly. There are other effective ways to deal with the refugee crisis and immigration -- e.g., establishing interim safe zones & camps in Syria & neighboring Muslim nations -- cheaper in the long run in cost, disruption and loss of life through terrorism. Germany especially is still dealing with guilt from WWII. The link below has a video of her speech, and textual excerpts.

Trump didn’t give Russians sources/methods in the meeting talking about new terrorist efforts to plant bombs on laptops to blow up airlines – information that clearly needs to be shared with all airline security services.  The media implied it was Israeli sources, and they say they don’t care – only the Left/media care to delegitimize Trump.  Trump has a point when he calls it a “witch hunt.”
Victor Davis Hansen, on Prager’s show, said what we’re seeing is a slow coup (against Trump).  People unable to accept the election results.  He’s being harassed for things the previous administration did but got away with because of the media bias, etc.  For example, Obama leaking bin Laden intel.

"Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones"
But of course no heads will roll there, because there will be no activists demanding withdrawal of advertising (unlike for Fox). Just more hypocrisy, and "being on the Left means never having to say you're sorry."

All the continuing leaks tend to support the notion of the “deep state,” with imbedded liberal/Left, anti-Trump/GOP bureaucrats, and the need to continue “cleaning the swamp.”  They are clearly partisan and political and part of the incessant drumbeat to impeach Trump, and are not in the national security interests.  These people need to be found and prosecuted for their crimes.
If the claim is correct about a Comey memo in February that Trump told him “I would hope you can see your way through to put this [the Flynn affair] behind us,” was not just a hopeful wish but obstruction of justice, why didn’t he share that at the time with DOJ, but wait until after Trump fired him?

RIP Free Speech in America, Part II.  Kimberley Strassel of the WSJ, author of “The Intimidation Game: How the Left Is Silencing Free Speech, gave an enlightening speech at Hillsdale College April 26 titled “The Left’s War on Free Speech” (https://imprimis.hillsdale.edu/lefts-war-free-speech/). She begins with an anecdote about her 3 squabbling young children, who when asked to define free speech showed themselves to reflect a real-world range, respectively:  a constitutional conservative, a libertarian and a socialist with totalitarian tendencies.
She then traces the shift in political culture the last 8 years to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling. With the Left unable to use campaign finance laws or argumentation to muzzle or win policy debates, it has resorted to a strategy to threaten, harass, and intimidate its opponents out of participation. [Standard Leftist tactics – e.g., Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals.”]
She says this strategy is manifest in 3 tactics.  First, unleashing of biased or intimidated federal and state bureaucracies on political opponents – e.g., the IRS targeting of conservative non-profits.  Second, for prosecutors to frighten and hound political opponents – the most terrifying, police-state-like example being the John Doe probe in Wisconsin, conducted in secret and putting targets (Scott Walker supporters) under gag orders.  Third is for activist groups to use blackmail against corporations, non-profits & individuals to silence them – e.g., against ALEC (free-market promoter), Frank VanderSloot (Romney supporter), California Prop 8 supporters (including myself) – and I would add Bill O’Reilly, Chick-Filet, Ivanka Trump, etc.  Her solutions include awareness, exposing & standing up to the bullies (they hide behind anonymity, like the masked rioters), and various legislation.  Let’s get to it!
By the way, Hillsdale College's monthly speech digest, Imprimis, is great, and free to subscribe to.

RIP Free Speech in America.  Time and again, violence or even the threat of it has succeeded in suppressing free speech at supposedly the most liberal campuses in America, such as Berkeley.  The Left is projecting again, with its accusations of fascism on the Right, and with its accusations of hate.  Real hate leads to violence.  And not standing up to it, just like paying ransom for hostages, encourages more of the same.  As noted in other posts, enlightened Liberals like Kirsten Powers (Author of “The Silencing: How the Left is Killing Free Speech”) recognize this.  And even Bill Maher.

Part of this movement includes the incessant campaign to bring down conservative spokesmen (O’Reilly, Hannity) at Fox News, to silence them.  No jealousy of ratings there, right?  And no sour grapes from the election.  If they can’t win at the ballot box, or in the war of ideas, this is what they resort to – character assassination and rioting.  It should be blatantly obvious to any observer.  Of course it’s good to know that all the other networks are so pristine as to not be worthy of such scrutiny.
We’re more divided than any time since the Civil War.  Some states have already effectively in part seceded from the Union, not recognizing federal immigration or drug laws, etc.
Pena:  “The era of strategic patience is over” – speaking about North Korea & previous administrations who kicked the can down the road.  We can no longer afford to.  “If China [& N. Korea?] won’t take care of it, the U.S. and its allies will.”

Climate Change Science & Policy

A note I sent to my sister who’s doing some STEM education work, and recently did an oceanographic cruise with scientists with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI).  [Regarding the climate change policies debate,] “I’m also interested in the communication from science to the public (& policy-makers).  I think scientists are generally measured.  They need to quantify their uncertainties (e.g., especially in forecasting climate impacts -- I understand worst-case predictions have come down considerably).  And the public & policy-makers need to understand those, and that even though there may be strong correlation with human activity, that doesn't justify draconian (especially US), worst case (Al Gore hysteria) policy impacts.  There needs to be understanding and discussion of the trade-offs -- the costs vs benefits/risks for US measures.  Especially if draconian US measures will have negligible global climate impact, but horrible economic (& military) impacts, which ripple through the rest of the world.  And stifling 3rd world development.  One new organization that has sprung up in our company is policy-related.  As complicated as the science & physical forecasting is, it gets even more complicated with the socio-economic & geo-political forecasting.  I think too many just assume that the science is settled and so, too must be the policy.  I think Carol [my other sister, and senior scientist at WHOI] sent me a copy of a paper she sent to the EPA that warranted more caution.”

Now the Russians, as well as the Chinese, have massed along the N. Korean border. And we all know what happened the last time 150,000 Chinese troops massed along the Yalu River. They may not be there for the reasons some assume (to pressure N. Korea to behave, to press for a coup, or to stop N. Korean refugees if war breaks out). Stalin & Mao collaborated in the Korean War. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4428384/Putin-sends-troops-Russia-s-border-North-Korea.html

And this is our non-nuclear option to take out the tunnels hiding thousands of North Korean artillery pieces. Cruise missiles (or electronic & cyber weapons?) can take out their missiles, which haven't been doing very well lately, anyway. And maybe China withholding coal & oil will take some steam out of their overheated rhetoric. Then they can parade and goose-step and sing praises to their great leader to their heart's content.

Just now ·
Now that the Trump-Russia conspiracy theory seems to have blown over, the Dems & Left are pivoting to their fallback options to oppose Trump: the Nazi card, and releasing his taxes.
The Nazi card has longstanding historical use by the Dems -- a favorite bogeyman (see the article linked below). It was even used in response to a post of mine just over a week ago. But as Sean Spicer learned, Hitler references are reserved for exclusive use by the Dems. We'll see how long they take to realize that the 3rd Reich isn't coming to America, and move on to the next hysteria du jour, or back to the other cards: racist, sexist, homophobe, xenophobe, bigot, etc.. Of course they wouldn't want to be sidetracked by less weighty matters like North Korea, ISIS, Syria, etc.

Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., the odds-on favorite to become the Democratic National Committee's chairman, had a long association with the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam.

A tale of two client states. China & Russia are reacting very differently to Trump's show of strength vis-a-vis their respective evil client states, N. Korea & Syria. Russia is in a state of denial & defensiveness -- e.g., the cold reception of UN Ambassador Haley & Secy. of State Tillerson in Moscow. China is reading the tea leaves correctly and reining in N. Korea (article below) with threats of real consequences -- by the Chinese. Batting .500 is much better than Obama's 0.000, and shows that already the token strike in Syria (along with telling the Chinese that if they don't act, we will, and the carrot of a better trade deal) is bearing fruit.

After some 30 years of negotiations and sanctions against N. Korea have only resulted in their full development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles. Of course we in California should be the most concerned with that combination in the hands of the nut job in N. Korea. And we see the consequences of how the stakes have raised by not being decisive earlier.

Does anyone really believe that Obama's Iran deal will stop Iran who are in bed w. Syria & Russia, and terrorists worldwide? They've continued to test their missiles, and there's no way to really prove their nuclear weapons development has halted or even slowed. We've seen how reliable Obama's assurances have proven, with Syria's chemical weapons, Obamacare, etc. But he spoke with & conveyed utter confidence and eloquence that mesmerized his hopeful, gullible lemmings (including the media) -- much more like Hitler than ludicrous comparisons with Trump. Again, we see the stark contrast between an eloquent but ineffective charlatan, and an ineloquent but genuine & effective executive.

This [the Supreme Court nomination] was the biggest reason I voted for Trump, and he delivered, as promised, a great Supreme Court justice (though they did have to go nuclear -- Harry Reid started the nuclear war). A great day for America. I am also partial to Gorsuch's Colorado origins -- I lived & went to grad school there for several years, and my parents lived there for 40 yrs. All the rest is icing on the cake -- real leadership (not from behind), immigration controls, health care & tax reforms, more reasonable environmental regulations, Keystone pipeline, strengthening the military (peace through strength), pro-business/economy/jobs, public safety, 2nd amendment, etc. I could care less about controversial tweets & off-hand remarks, Russian conspiracy theories, the constant hysterical barrage from the Left & media, etc.

Here is a dialogue between someone (whom I don’t know) who responded to my foregoing Facebook post, and myself.  I remove his name – I don’t want to personalize this, but rather share it because it unfortunately reflects the views of too many, and needs to be addressed.

X:  I wonder what Germans would have tweeted after Adolph's election and turning against the Versailles treaty. I'm sure they were all for it. Turning a blind eye to one's faults and questionable associations simply because you agree with his politics is a very slippery slope
Mark Clayson Yes, again with the Hitler comparison -- just more laughable hysteria. Turns out the only confirmed perpetrators of the so-called anti-Semitism spike in the US were a mental case Jewish teenager in Israel making calls here, and a Black kid with Leftist leanings [Disinformation is a typical Leftist tactic].  Enjoy the conspiracy theories while they last. Of course the Left showed no concern over Obama's very real associations with Marxists & radicals like Ayers, Alinsky, his father, etc. When one truly loves & courts one's wife, does he say that he wants to "fundamentally transform" her? How about doubling her indebtedness, wrecking her health care, reducing her security system, & status among colleagues, etc., etc. Actions speak much louder than words. Of course some are more enamored of the pleasant words of an eloquent charlatan like Obama. "By their fruits ye shall know them."

X: The truth hurts doesn't it?

Mark Clayson I shared documented truth that you couldn't counter. You tell me if it hurts.  And tell me if you're seeing clearly enough to remove the mote in Trump's eye.  "Turning a blind eye" and "caring less" about certain things are two very different things. But that should be very obvious to anyone who professes concern over language.

X: I refer you to my previous response. FYI thou dost protest too much. You might reflect on why that is.  This will end our discussion.

Mark Clayson For anyone reading this, before anyone accuses me of turning a blind eye to Trump's faults and imperfections, they need to read my many blog posts during the primary election (http://highgroundunderground.blogspot.com/). He was my last choice among the candidates. But the point is that he was still a better choice than Hillary, and he also has many redeeming qualities -- one being a man of action, and good actions as he's demonstrating. Many who had concerns previously are being pleasantly surprised that he is governing as a conservative. So now that he is our president, my tendency is to rejoice over, and encourage, the good things he's accomplishing, rather than wring my hands over his occasional inarticulate, uncareful statements -- after all, he's not a seasoned politician. But I prefer that to the slick charlatan we had the last 8 years. If anyone can tell me which of Trump's faults or associations are worthy of impeachment, or obstruction of his agenda, another Hitler comparison, or even excessive hand wringing and moaning, have at it. And I will counter with a much weightier list from his predecessor or election opponent.
Those who "protest too much" are the "not my president" marchers and rioters, those who make tired Hitler comparisons, those who block even a pristine Supreme Court nomination, who fight Trump every inch of the way in every conceivable matter in the media and otherwise. Who fight his immigration controls and enforcement. And who ignorantly claim he's violated the war powers act in his Syria strike. I'm fed up with it.
[I add in further response that is why I protest so much – “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it” any longer.  Nor should anyone else who agrees with the conservative cause.  We’ve been silent and passive too long, unlike our opponents.  The time to stand up and fight is now, rather than allow our opponents to think they can cow us by their tactics.  And the ignorance and hysteria of our opponents (which need to be exposed), as well as the rightness and importance of our cause, should only strengthen our determination.  There’s too much at stake at this critical juncture, and America must not fail now, for the sake of not only ourselves, but the world.  And America does have a special purpose to fulfill in the world, which is partly evidenced in its divine origins, described in the book “The American Miracle.”  Of whom much is given, much is expected.]

April 6
There's a new sheriff in town. One who enforces red lines. Personally, I think perhaps the missiles should have been sent to the head of the snake rather than the airfield from which the chemical attack was launched. And after this, conspiracy theorists still believe Trump is cozy with the Russians (after several months of digging, and no evidence)? The Russians are partners in crime with the Syrians & Iranians. I'm sure they're wishing Hillary had won. Trump is showing himself more and more to be a man of his word who does what he says. Maybe the Chinese will take note, as well as the Russians & Iranians & Assad.  And North Koreans.

The attack was in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week.
NYTIMES.COM
Mark Clayson 59 US Tomahawk missiles @ $832k each = $49M. 20 Syrian MiG-23 aircraft @ $3.6-6.6M = $72-132M. Maybe about 5-10% of their fixed wing air force. But the message that there's a new sheriff in town? Priceless.

The Russian Hacking & Conspiracy Theories

On Prager (hour 1), Katie Pavlich (Townhall.com editor) believes the Russians didn’t especially side with one candidate in the election (e.g., the Senate hearings revealed that Rubio also was hacked, especially due to his strong views on Russia), Dems less secure servers than GOP’s).  They likely were seeking to sow suspicion and distrust in the system (e.g., politicization of government agencies like FBI, CIA, NSA, IRS, etc.), animosity between parties, chaos, and raise the image of Russian importance & influence.  Whether or not they attempted those things, all those things have certainly materialized – I don’t believe any of those have been worse in my lifetime. Not that foreign meddling in elections is anything new or surprising – after all, the Obama administration clearly meddled in the Israeli election, spending significant effort & our taxpayers’ money to defeat Netanyahu, whom Obama clearly despised.  The Dems have little room to talk.

As Victor Davis Hanson pointed out (3/31/17 Prager Hour 3), even seasoned American politicians, polling companies, analysts etc. were predicting with 87%+ certainty that Hillary would win.  It wasn’t only the Dems who were surprised at the outcome.  Much less could the Russians, with much less understanding of our electoral system & politics, have possibly anticipated or expected that Trump could win, even with any hacking impacts, which even now look minimal.  I believe that their purpose to even try meddling by hacking was not necessarily to throw the election, but possibly to gather incriminating dirt on the projected winner (or any winner), and thereby be able post-election to embarrass, weaken, blackmail, and/or delegitimize.

Maybe the two theories are not inconsistent.  If the Russians were hedging bets on the election outcome and wanting to weaken anyone who might win if they had clearly hostile policies, Rubio was an early favorite.  In addition to the claimed better cyber defenses by the GOP (Hillary’s lax server is only one component of that), Trump may have been a lower priority target.  But even if the Russians for some reason preferred Trump, that doesn’t mean there was any collusion with the Trump team, and certainly none has been found after months of investigation.  And Trump’s selection of key national security cabinet people like Mattis, with firm attitudes on Russia, and full support in the Syria operation, defies the alleged coziness with the Russians.

Trump was a harder person to consistently read in his public record, and tried to keep an open mind (or at least telegraph that impression) on Russia for possible future negotiating.  He’s stated a number of times that he doesn’t like to telegraph his real military plans to the enemy, and that could apply more broadly.  Clearly he had no hesitation in quickly reacting to the Syrian chemical attack by an attack on Russia’s close ally, knowing full well it would not be well-received by Russia.  And it was not – they have discontinued bilateral protection of forces agreements, and said they will in future defend their ally – they did not bring their anti-missile defenses to bear despite advance notification of the attack, and having defenses in place.

The Russians have also brought warships closer to Syria, likely in large part as a face-saving measure.  And our UN Ambassador Nikki Haley certainly left a lot of face for them (& Iran & Assad & the UN) to save (go Nikki!!!!  Finally, someone telling it like it is.):

March 17
Alan Dershowitz (liberal legal expert) says that though he disagrees with it, the immigration ban is constitutional – the same countries Obama identified as of concern.  These liberal judges are engaging in psychoanalysis, not legal analysis, inferring intent from an inarticulate campaign statement.

March 15
Let’s see, a guy who is not a career politician gets no slack for his unpolished comments, but Obama & Hillary do when they speak of those who “cling to their guns and religion,” and “basket of deplorables?”

There’s another new liberal/Left cause – to impose a 5% tax on privileged white guys!!  Will these “victimized” minorities never take responsibility for their status, or give credit to their privileges of living in this country rather than others that are truly bad?  Like the reparations for Black slavery – the 600,000 who gave their blood and lives to free slaves and all the other treasure spent and lost in the Civil War, and the gains of the civil rights movement, are not enough?  How many generations must pass before the sins of the fathers aren’t visited on the children?  And by far the vast majority of whites have no ancestors who were slaveholders. These are just more schemes for entitlements.
