Carly Rising & Hillary Sinking
GOP Debate
Round 2
I attended a debate party Sept. 16 in
Torrance. The GOP field has great depth, and several good choices. Just as in
other races, it is not to the swift. Trump, & more recently Carson, have
taken early prominence, but I think we we've now begun to see them fade. Trump
took a beating. Strong performances by most others, but I think one star that
continues to rise (as I anticipated in earlier blog posts as more get to know
her) is Carly Fiorina.
After graduating to the first tier
debate group, following a commanding performance in the last 2nd tier debate,
Fiorina held her own in the clash of the CEO titans with Trump. And she
passionately and smartly articulated some timely wisdom. She repeated the need
for stronger leadership to buck the status quo & logjams of decades. I
liked the show of strength she would counter Putin with, and the Ayatollah --
actions speak louder than words, especially to them. And I liked her imagery of
lady liberty and lady justice, with the symbols of the torch, scales &
sword. Also, her stance on drugs & the economy, and a very passioned
statement that the Planned Parenthood videos speak to the character of our
nation.
Rubio had a strong night, and also spoke
strongly about Putin, immigration, climate change regulations & the Left
undermining institutions like the family that uphold the values that would keep
our society civil. Cruz spoke strongly about Iran, Planned Parenthood, &
immigration control. Walker was consistently strong without the flash -- right
to work, defense, taxes, etc. Carson & Paul want a flat tax. Bush stood on
his pro life record, and defended well other attacks on him. Huckabee seemed to
keep stepping back from the fray and looking for the bigger picture & moral
issues -- the "criminalization of Christianity," judicial tyranny,
etc. Kasich had some strong moments about his record, as did Christie. And all
got their licks in against Trump, who ate some crow, but still made some good
points -- he just doesn't have a good, proven, conservative leadership record,
and has more bluster than substance. Carson had good points on a guestworker
program, etc., but seemed to stumble in some other areas -- debates may not be
his forte. All showed a lighter side.
I caught part of the tier 2 debate. I noted that sanctimonious Santorum said they
need to avoid personal attacks against other candidates. Like those he leveled at Romney in 2012? Santorum is turning out to be a real loser
this cycle, and as Medved said, it’s probably time for him to follow Perry.
The Dems
I’ll leave it to the cartoons to tell the story.
